Birds
Facts
Birds are incredible builders. Around homes in North Carolina, they may use dryer vents, bathroom vents, attic vents, porch columns, chimneys, roof returns, gutters, and soffits as nesting spots.
They can build nests using twigs, grass, feathers, leaves, string, lint, pine straw, and other materials. A nest may look small from the outside but can pack a vent full of debris.
Some birds are protected by law, so removal timing matters. Active nests with eggs or young may need to be handled differently than inactive nests.

Risks
Bird nests can create more than a mess. In dryer vents, nesting material can block airflow and create a fire concern. In bathroom or exhaust vents, nests can trap moisture and odor. Around rooflines, nests can hold moisture against building materials and attract insects.
Bird droppings can stain siding, porches, decks, sidewalks, vehicles, and outdoor equipment. Droppings and nesting debris can also create cleanup concerns, especially when they build up over time.
What we do
We inspect the nesting area, determine whether the nest is active or inactive, remove nesting material when appropriate, clean affected areas, and install screening or exclusion materials to help prevent future nesting.
